Cable Free

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Since October 2007 we have been living a cable TV free life. We got rid of our $150 a month cable bill and picked up a 5-at-a-time NetFlix for $30 instead. While there are a couple things that I miss (like Dexter, The L Word and the morning news) I have adapted very well to only having movies to watch (although I can just wait for the seasons to come out on DVD and then rent them anyway). I have found that it gives me more time in the morning to do other things instead of plopped in front of the TV. Also, with marathon training now in full swing it’s not really like we have that much free time anyway.

I guess you could call me cheap, but i just could not justify paying $90 more a month for watching the same old movies that were on On Demand. Especially when what we really wanted to watch were the newer movies that were on Pay-Per-View. Screw that. When we called Comcast to cancel our service they told us that our average daily viewing time ran about 2 hours a day which would come out to be, on average, us paying $2.50 per hour. $2.50 per hour to sit on the couch getting nothing done other then.. well, nothing.

But on a side note, I did find it just a little scary that our cable company kept track of not only how many hours a day our TV was on but also logged what stations we were tuning into……

So…Big Brother is watching you….watching? I guess we should have known. I wonder what the DVR people make of the fact that all of our recorded shows are Spider-Man-related? (We can’t be the only house where the 6-year-old knows how to use it better than his parents, can we?)
